Experts call for earlier start of ART

Lucknow: The protocol for starting anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in patients with HIV is in for a major change. So far, an HIV-positive person was in for ART only if his/her CD4 (a type of cell) count was 350 units or . 
    But now, treatment will begin when the count is 500 units or below. The fact came to fore during the ongoing annual conference of the Association of Physicians of India being hosted by medicine department, 
King George's Medical University. 
    Giving more details, Dr Jaya Chakrawarti, associate professor at Banaras Hindu University Medical College, said the decision will help reduce morbidity and mortality of people living with HIV. 
    But, on the flip side, the new norm will lead to an increase in the total number of persons undergoing ART . 
    According to National Aids Control Society, 5 lakh persons with HIV are listed with them for treatment
